All the UK coffee chains ranked from cheapest to most expensive – and number one is rogue
The order might surprise you
Winter is well and truly here and there’s nothing better than a takeaway hot choccy or cappuccino on a freezing cold day.
Hot drinks just don’t hit the same when you make them at home, but buying from coffee shops is getting ridiculously expensive these days.
A new study by Vouchers4real.co.uk has revealed which UK coffee chain is actually the cheapest and the most expensive.
They calculated the average cost of six popular hot drinks across five different locations, and the results are in.
5. Starbucks
Straight in at the most expensive is Starbucks. It tastes great and has the most choice, but it’s just so pricey. The average cost of a hot drink is a whopping £4.28, and even just a bog-standard cup of tea costs £3.34. That’s the cheapest hot drink on the menu too! An americano will set you back £3.92 on average and a cappuccino is £4.40.
4. Costa
The next most expensive is Costa, with an average price of £4.05 per hot drink. The cheapest drink at the coffee chain is also a tea, which is slightly cheaper at £3.09 – but that’s still a hell of a lot for a teabag in some boiling water! An americano is the second cheapest drink at £3.70, while a cappuccino comes in at £4.29.
3. Pret
It’s often considered the most expensive, but Pret is actually a lot cheaper than you think. The average price of a hot drink is £3.88, a whole pound less than Starbucks. An americano costs £3.60, while a latte is £4.04. However, an average cup of tea will still set you back a massive £3.30. What is it with the tea?!
2. Caffè Nero
Most Read
Just missing out on the top spot is Caffè Nero, which was once a dying-out coffee shop that only old people went to, but it’s recently had a huge revival. The average price of a hot drink there is £3.85, with a tea costing £3.10, an americano £3.51 and a latte priced at £4.01. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!
1. Greggs
And the top spot goes to Greggs! The chain is best known for its sausage rolls and cakes, but the coffee is great too. If you want a cheap hot drink, you’ll only pay £2.22 on average, which is less than half of a drink at Starbucks. They ranked as the cheapest across all six drinks, especially for the price of a tea which is just £1.55.
