Five ways to be more green around University of Lincoln campus this Climate Action Week

Here are a few ways to be green and make a difference this week

From 18th to 23rd November, the University of Lincoln is hosting the Climate Action Week. There are art exhibitions, nature walks and the festival will end with a Lincoln-wide litter pick. So in the spirit of this week’s focus on sustainability, here are five tips to help you do your bit for the environment.

1. Use less paper

This one is easier said than done. There’s always things like journal articles and essay drafts to print out but these resources can be easily accessed online nowadays with no paper required. That also means you don’t have to trudge to the library to battle with the printers. Win-win.

2. Use Minerva’s revolving door

This may seem small but using the revolving door keeps heat inside the building, meaning the central heating doesn’t have to be kept running constantly. Also, you power the door rather than electricity. You’re much more reliable than whatever powers those ATB doors.

3. Use the recycling bins

I feel like this is an obvious one but it’s got to be said.

There are paper and plastic recycling bins all over campus so there’s no excuse not to put your 9am energy drink can in one of them. No excuse.

Also, don’t drop your non-recyclables – it’s illegal and gross. The swans don’t want to live on a dumping ground of a campus, and neither do we.

4. Take the stairs if you can

This one goes hand in hand with using the revolving door. The lift needs power, use those powerful legs instead. Also, unlike the lift, you can’t get stuck on the stairs for hours with three strangers, waiting for the fire brigade to rescue you with nothing to eat but a three month old cereal bar you found at the bottom of your backpack.

Also, there’s no need to go to the gym if you’re taking the stairs all day, so, positives all around.

5. Enjoy campus’ natural beauty

The University of Lincoln is surrounded by some beautiful scenery. The Riseholme campus is set in the rolling countryside of the Lincolnshire Wolds and the City campus sits right next to the Brayford Pool. Take a wander round and have a look at what Climate Action Week is trying to protect.
