Sarah’s boyfriend says she’s not racist after Big Brother warns her for ‘stop the boats’ joke

Housemates were offended after she chanted ‘stop the gloats’ at them

Big Brother housemate Sarah has been given a formal warning from the show after making a joke referring to ‘stop the boats’, offending housemates Hanah, Segun and Khaled in the process. After we saw last night Big Brother issue a formal warning to Sarah, who has admitted previously that she voted UKIP – her boyfriend has spoken out in her defence.

After certain housemates all qualified for the final week and won a shopping task, Sarah chanted “stop the gloats” – a reference to the Rishi Sunak slogan “stop the boats” regarding immigration. This upset Hanah, who voiced her frustration with the comment and said she wasn’t happy.

Sarah was called into the diary room by Big Brother, who said her stop the boats joke was out of line. “Sarah, Big Brother wants to talk to you about language you have been using in the house,” the voice of Big Brother began, as Sarah sat confused as to what was about to happen.

“Hanah, Khaled, and Emma had been aware that you previously used the term “gloaty” about Hanah. This was referring to a conversation you had with Emma where you described Hanah as gloaty in a reference to Marcello becoming the Head of House.

“On a separate occasion prior to this, during the Vampires and Villagers task, together with Nathan, you chanted, “Stop the gloats”, which you confirmed was a reference to the political phrase, “Stop the boats”.”

Sarah responded to Big Brother calling her out for stop the boats joke by saying “For me, it was just funny because it rhymed, and I don’t really talk about politics that often because it’s not something I’m interested in, but it was a joke. It had no racial connotations, I have no connotations about boats or immigration, or anything like that. It was just making funny of political slogans.”

“When Hanah questioned you about you calling her gloaty, you referred to the ‘Stop the gloats’ chant you had created with Nathan during the earlier task,” Big Brother told her. “Your use of language around this political reference has had an impact on your fellow housemates. As you know, the Big Brother house is made up of people from all walks of life with different life experiences.”

Sarah apologised, saying “Sorry, I’m not disagreeing with you, there is lots of walks of life, but I did not mean that with anything towards immigration or racial intent. For me, it was just a funny wordplay.vI’d like to say that if I’ve offended anybody by making that kind of joke, I am genuinely 100 per cent remorseful.”

After much fury on social media about the comment, Sarah’s boyfriend Aled Huw spoke out in her defence on Facebook, in a comment that made things a lot worse. “Please understand the actual understanding of the world “racist” before you actively label someone. By definition, an immigrant isn’t a race, it’s a group of people that comes from all countries across the world, for instance, one of the biggest sections of immigrants entering illegally to the UK are Albanians, a predominantly white country. Sarah’s comments if you could stretch them that far were xenophobic if you wish to take a particular narrative.”

After this received even more backlash, Aled Huw apologised for what he said initially in a new statement to Super TV on Twitter. Huw explained “I’d just like to add some clarity: The post was written in reply to a gentleman whom was accusing Sarah of racism. The post was in reply stating that whilst he quite rightly has the opinion to voice his anger, that the incorrect use of the terminology is undermining the value of it which isn’t good for any of us and that if he wanted to, he should use the correct terms to make his point.

“I completely take responsibility for my actions in writing it extremely poorly which may have alluded to me suggesting Sarah was xenophobic, this isnt the case at all. Sarah has spent most of her adult life working with people of different race and religion from across the world and having been her partner for over 3 years, I can say she actively enjoys learning from new people of different faiths and cultures. A poorly worded message from myself isn’t what our family and friends needed at this extremely difficult time and I made a grave fault in my judgement.”

The episode ended last night with Sarah getting told off by Big Brother for the stop the boats joke and apologising – we will not know til tonight if that is the end of the matter or if there’s further punishment.
