Here’s what your Cardiff University accommodation says about you
Your student digs dictate more of your personality than you think
Being a fresher is daunting.
We all went through the stress of not knowing which was the right accommodation for us.
While we all know there’s far more to an enjoyable university experience than your halls, I think it’s safe to say that rats and roaches don’t tend to enhance that experience, no matter how fun your new friends are or how interesting your course is.
So, here is what your Cardiff University accommodation truly says about you…
Aberdare Hall
Aberdare is sort of like a haunted boarding school. If you go here, you are definitely a girl serious about leaving uni with a First.
Seeing as this is Cardiff’s only all-girls accommodation, men are nothing but a mere myth to you. It’s a win-win for girlies who only like other girlies.
It is also part-catered, giving you even less reason to leave the house and face society. I think it’s safe to say you’d choose a night tucked into bed over the SU.
Aberconway Hall
What can I say, the building speaks for itself. Being next to the business building, I’m sure that Aberconway is doing absolutely nothing to inspire the next generation of finance bros.
If you live here, you are likely an economics or law student who has career ambitions and their routine nailed. A fun Friday night in Aberconway Hall would likely be gathered around a screen watching the stock market crash – fun for some, but not all.
Cartwright Court
Now, not that I am biased, but I do believe if you live in Cartwright Court then you are pretty cool.
Most Read
It is a trek away from pretty much anywhere, and the layout is confusing, but house parties and barbecues were a common appearance here.
It definitely was not your first choice, in fact, it probably didn’t make it onto the list, but you’re glad a stroke of luck put you and a bunch of strangers in the same place – united by not wanting to be there.
Colum Hall
Colum Hall is essentially an extension of Aberconway but with an ensuite.
If you choose to live here, you are also going to be a law or economics student, except you don’t like people. You also definitely brought your Xbox with you from home.
From the outside, the building is somewhat falling apart, but at least it’s placed halfway between the SU and Taly, so for the few of you who do play sports it’s not too far of a walk.
Roy Jenkins
I don’t think anybody truly knows what goes on in Roy Jenkins. With a total of 42 students, it’s a mystery who roams these halls.
If you live here, you probably are lying because nobody knows anyone from here. You definitely have a car – one of the few accommodations lucky enough to have proper parking.
There are some good kebabs and charity shops around, but I’ve never once seen a light on inside.
Senghennydd Court
If you live here, good luck.
The Senghetto always has the wildest stories, and you will definitely have pet rats living in your cupboards eating your food. You don’t really have an excuse to not show up to your 9ams seeing as you live so close to uni, but still, you find your own excuse.
If you’ve made it through a year here – congratulations, not everyone does.
Senghennydd Hall
If you live in Senghennydd Hall, you are posh. You spend your days trying to differentiate yourself from the Senghetto, although nobody really believes you.
Most of your time is spent looking out of your window to Senghennydd Court, watching the drama unfold. But, whatever you do, don’t leave your bottom window open, as the rats from across the road might sneak their way in…
Taly North
If you live here, you are without a doubt an athlete. You make the most of the nearby PureGym, and turn your nose up to those who frequent Maccies.
This is the cheapest out of the Taly residences, and the only accommodation where you can select between a small or large room. Why anyone would choose a small room is unknown, but spending most of your time on the pitch, your room is merely a bed to sleep in.
Those of you who don’t play sports spend your time drooling out of the window at hotties playing sports, wondering how you ended up here.
Taly South
You are “those who frequent the Maccies” and you also make up the majority of Cardiff’s netball and rugby player population.
Congratulations, you got everyone’s first choice, and you like to remind people how great it is. 9am lectures don’t exist here, neither do Thursday lectures or lectures in general. Your attendance to YOLO is by far higher than your attendance to uni, but what does it matter when first year doesn’t count.
You’re probably currently thinking you’ve made it in life, but just wait until move-out day, the stairs are brutal.
University Halls
For those who go to University Halls, my condolences. You are either strange in your decision-making or ridiculously unlucky. The bus to lectures makes you consider dropping out most mornings, but the collective beef with the cleaners keeps you going.
I’m not sure what karma took place to land you living here, but it certainly must have been pretty bad.
No matter where you end up, you will likely become a ruthless promoter of your halls and defy outside opinion. You’re guaranteed to make friends with those around you – celebrating the ups as much as the downs. Just enjoy freshers’ year (however you see fit).
But, no matter how hard you try, you will never outrun the reputation that your student digs give you.
