University of Liverpool up six places in The Times UK university league table

Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Nottingham are all sitting below UoL for 2025

The University of Liverpool has risen by six places in the UK University Rankings 2025 league table by The Times, which awarded the Russell Group university 23rd place in the UK.

This increase of six places compared to last year sees UoL score 743 points out of a possible 1000, awarded by the newspaper.

The Times’ rankings also sees the university sitting at second place regionally, in the North West category.

Comparatively, Liverpool John Moores University has jumped up the table by four places into 66th, with Liverpool Hope sitting at 94th after losing six positions in the table.

Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Nottingham are all sitting below UoL for 2025.

There are a number of factors that influence the rankings, including teaching quality, student experience, graduate prospects, and the percentage of students awarded a First or 2:1.

Helen Davies, editor of The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide, said: “The best universities — whether they were founded in the 15th century or 2005 — are local and global powerhouses of intellectual thought and creativity, from the arts to science, that can power economic regeneration and lead the way to a better life.

“But what and where to study — and how to pay for it — has never been tougher. This is where our comprehensive guide can help.

“This year we have tweaked our methodology to keep up with contemporary concerns around climate change and careers and have added in a sustainability metric, teaming up with People & Planet and boosted the weighting of graduate prospects.”

In response to this morning’s publication, Professor Tim Jones, vice-chancellor of University of Liverpool said: “With the announcement of the latest Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide I am delighted to see the University continue its upward trajectory across a number of important league tables this year.

“I am proud of all the colleagues working hard towards the University’s continued success,” he added.
