Sabrina says she’s been diagnosed with depression and reveals real reason behind Steven split

‘I isolated myself from my friends for a long time out of embarrassment’

One thing I think none of us were expecting at the Love Is Blind UK reunion was the announcement that Sabrina and Steven had split up after their wedding. It sounds as though it’s all turned a bit sour since they said yes at the altar, with the couple sharing their differences one year on. Now, in an interview since, Sabrina has given more insight into their breakup.

For the most part, during the reunion show, Sabrina seemed to say the fault lies with Steven. The couple said distance was a big reason behind their ultimate divorce – with Sabrina being based in Belfast and Steven in London. However, Sabrina called out Steven for his lack of effort and communication.

She said his communication with her was virtually none existent, and it was always her visiting London and making changes to her life to help him. Steven argued otherwise and said that wasn’t actually the case, but didn’t give much more of an explanation of his side of the story. He briefly mentioned his finances, quitting his job and something going on in his family, which all played a part in it not working out between them.

In an interview after the Love Is Blind UK reunion, Sabrina has now opened up more about her split with Steven, and revealed the full reason they broke up after the show.

“For me, I married Steven because I genuinely believed he was my person, and I will always love that person that he was throughout filming,” she told The Mirror. “But unfortunately, that just didn’t translate into the real world and when the cameras had stopped rolling.

“There were a lot of promises made before we got married that, once we were married, he wasn’t able to deliver on. Even through that all, I really, really tried to make it work. I travelled back and forth to London and I prioritised us and I just didn’t get the same respect or commitment in return.

“So when it was his turn to show up at Christmas, he didn’t. And at that point, I realised I had to choose myself, because a marriage has to be a partnership and it has to work both ways.”

Speaking about how the breakup has affected her mental health, Sabrina said she has been diagnosed with depression since, and is still in therapy now. “It was incredibly difficult. It had a really bad effect on me emotionally, mentally and physically,” she said. “I was diagnosed with depression, I had a lot of anticipatory grief for the life we were meant to have together.

“That was really hard to come to terms with, because for me it was legit, it was real and I had this whole life planned out with this person. So that was really difficult to let go of. You’re almost mourning something that hasn’t even happened yet.

“I isolated myself from my friends for a long time out of embarrassment. I’ve asked them all to come to the wedding and then 86 days later I’m like, ‘Yeah, it didn’t work out.’ So I just took a lot of time to work on myself. Did a lot of therapy, still doing therapy. And did some solo travelling and gradually started to get back to myself.”
