Marvel costume assistant claims how little he got paid after seeing Robert Downey Jr’s new fee
‘I could not meet basic needs… We won the Oscar, too’
A Marvel costume assistant has complained about how bad the pay was for his work on major MCU films after reports that Robert Downey Jr will be paid “significantly more” than $80 million to return to the MCU as Dr Doom in at least two films. Tyler Scruggs, who worked as a costume assistant for the MCU, shared what he claims he was paid for his work on major films in the franchise – one of which went on to win the Oscar for costuming.
After the reports came out about what Robert Downey Jr will allegedly be getting paid for his much anticipated and widely talked about shocking return to the MCU as Dr Doom following his departure as Iron Man previously, Tyler Scruggs posted about his pay on Twitter / X.

Tyler Scruggs claims “I will repeat it until I’m blue in the face. I made $12.50 an hour working 70+ hours a week on Black Panther Wakanda Forever. Went up to $14 on Blade Version 1.0. Oh yeah – we won the Oscar too.” $12.50 an hour is currently about £9.73.
In response to a freelancer VFX artist who said “That is insane. I was a freelance VFX artist for about five years. I’m just gonna blanket say that any below the line work is thankless to some degree. But this pay is truly fucking crazy,” Scruggs claimed “Exactly, like I know how this works but I could not meet basic needs and had literally 0 time for anything but Marvel.”

When someone made the argument “time for a new career”, and the general sentiment that Scruggs was whining, Scruggs said “Dude, it’s not about me. I can’t get a new job on productions that were ended / shut down two years ago. I’m saying that the pay disparity is far too great to be sustainable, and if they have the budget to give Robert Downey Jr $80 million to be in a movie, they have dollars for those who make them.”
