Ranked: These are the unis where students have been caught cheating using ChatGPT the most

Birmingham City students have well and truly been exposed

Let’s be honest, we’ve all used ChatGPT at one point or another, but it seems some UK university students have been using the software more than others. Using ChatGPT can have serious consequences for students, from simply having to redo their work to something as extreme as being expelled from their university.

According to The Mirror, senior staff at 82 per cent of universities have had to punish students for using AI tools such as ChatGPT, which has now been banned from many universities. Throughout the whole UK over 2,962 students have been penalised over the past two years, with 402 students at Birmingham City University using AI to plagiarise their work.

AI company AIPRM submitted Freedom of Information requests to 157 UK universities, with 80 responding. Out of these, 65 revealed they had already caught cheaters, with just 15 claiming they hadn’t discovered any students cheating using AI yet. The top 10 universities for cheaters include Coventry and Kent, whilst St Andrews found only 23 students and KCL just 19.

So, let’s find out how many students have been caught cheating at university using ChatGPT, and you can either revel in moral superiority or feel relieved you haven’t been caught, yet…

  • Birmingham City University – 402
  • Leeds Beckett University – 395
  • Coventry University – 231
  • Robert Gordon University (Aberdeen) – 211
  • University of Hull – 193
  • Birbeck University of London – 147
  • Leeds Trinity University – 119
  • University of Lincoln – 82
  • University of Kent – 74
  • Abertay University (Dundee) – 72

Looks like the students at Birmingham City University have been leaning on ChatGPT a little too much, with a whopping 402 cheaters caught in the past two years. That’s more than 383 students who have been detected using AI when compared to KCL.
