All the controversies and backlash Katy Perry’s had before the Woman’s World drama

Katy Perry has been hit with mammoth sized backlash in the wake of her dropping her latest comeback single Woman’s World. The song has been not only critically panned for its dreadful lyricism and dated attempt at girl power, but also because her choice of collaborating with Dr Luke despite allegations against him has raised more than a few eyebrows. This isn’t the first time Katy Perry has seen backlash though – here’s a rundown of all of her controversies through the years.

Badmouthing Britney Spears

Twice, Katy Perry has been called out for making light of Britney Spears’ mental health struggles. The first is from the Grammys red carpet, where Katy says she hasn’t shaved her head because she’s saving it for “a public breakdown”. She then makes the same joke again with Ryan Seacrest on the same night.

An older video has also surfaced of Katy Perry saying she “understands why Britney’s nuts” and says she brings on trouble herself. Majorly yikes.

American Idol backlash

One of the most controversial things Katy Perry did whilst being a judge on American Idol were the comments she made to a young mum auditioning for the show. Sara Beth Liebe told the judging panel that she’d had three kids, and a visibly shocked Katy Perry reacted by grabbing the table and leaning back on it.

Sara then said “If Katy lays on the table I’m going to pass out”, joking along. Katy then responded saying “Honey you’ve been laying on the table too much.” This was met with huge backlash from views, and Sara Beth Liebe actually made a TikTok about it saying it was embarrassing to have it air.

She backed Rick Caruso for LA mayor, despite the fact he’s previously donated to anti-abortion organisations

In 2022, Katy Perry was certainly not flavour of the month in the LA mayor race when she gave her backing to Rick Caruso. Caruso was a Republican turned Democrat. In the past he’d donated to anti-abortion clinics. Most were baffled Katy Perry backed Caruso over progressive candidate Karen Bass.

Katy Perry turned off the comments on her Instagram when she got backlash, but it didn’t stop it becoming one of her worst controversies. One tweet at the time did not mince words, saying ““As much as the right try to spin it, Katy Perry voting for Rick Caruso is not an indication of anything other than a rich white woman voting for a fake Democrat who will ultimately have no effect on the quality of her life but will worsen the lives of many others.
