Should same-sex marriage be legalised in Northern Ireland?

Monday saw gay marriage’s fifth defeat in Stormont as the DUP’s “petition of concern” vetoed the vote to change the law.

As a result Northern Ireland remains the only country in the UK and Ireland yet to change marriage laws.

We went out to hear your thoughts on whether same-sex marriage should be legal in Northern Ireland.

“Everyone has the right to their own opinion and belief but ultimately we should have gay marriage.

“The South can do it so why should we be the sore thumb hanging on to the past?”

“I think it should be legalised. I’m from Germany and interestingly I think Germany was one of the first to legalise civil partnership.

“It’s almost embarrassing coming from somewhere open minded to somewhere where it is such a big issue.”

“I think there’s a better way, allowing gay marriage fails to solve a bigger question.

“I think it’s just worth asking why gay people think they need to get married, what is it that they’re actually trying to satisfy.”
