Brookes boaters heading to Europe to race for Team GB

Members of the legendary Oxford Brookes rowing team have been selected to represent Team GB at the European Universities Championships.

This result follows Oxford Brooke’s recent success in the World U23 Championships. Undergrads Joel Cassels and Jamie Copus bagged a silver in the lightweight men’s quadruple skulls and 2014 grad Annie Withers won bronze as part of the women’s eight.

The European Universities Championships take place next month in Hanover Germany, home to the ninth championship since it started in 2005.

Members of the Brooke’s men’s team will be competing in a total of three events; the men’s eight, four and lightweight double.

The women’s team will be racing in the women’s four, an event which they previously won gold in at the BUCS Regatta, no pressure or anything.

Oxford Brooke’s Senior Women’s Squad Coach, Allan French said: “It is exciting to be sending such a large team out to the Championships and will be a great opportunity for the Brookes rowers to race against the best University competition from across Europe.”

Both men and women’s rowing teams have experienced numerous achievements throughout 2015 and the EUC is another rung on the ladder.

Brookes’ success doesn’t end there. At the BUCS awards in July, Brookes Sport won the award for the ‘Most Improved University’.

Keith Kelly, Director of Sport at Oxford Brookes said: “This is a huge achievement for the sports department at Brookes particularly as we have, over the past year, introduced more recreational sport and physical activities than ever before.”

The award recognises the improvement Brookes Sport contributed to the University Boat Club and is presented to the university which has risen fastest in the BUCS ranking. Having risen by 22 places, Brookes pipped169 other unis for the award.
