Spot the difference: Uni vs. Hallam

Want to tell whether someone goes to Uni of or Hallam from a distance? Daisy Collingwood has got some pointers.

Uni of

When one puts one’s full mind, body, and soul into the pursuit of academia, it’s understandable that something’s got to give. Sadly, in the case of Uni of students, the thing that gives is often acceptable clothing. Uni of students commit a fantastic range of style crimes that can be spotted strutting down the Broomhill catwalk; cords, waterproofs in clear skies, and, in some particularly unforgivable cases, socks and sandals.

A particularly favoured Uni of look is the heavy duty camping rucksack filled with extra reading and the accompanying hunchback, not complete without a flask and a scientific calculator spilling out of the side pockets, ready for a long haul session in Western Bank. For the ultimate accessory, team that with a boxed cello casually slung over the shoulder and you’ll be fully on trend.

Then there are the University sports teams, often considered to be a great release from the hardships of intellectual life. Sadly those who wish to partake in exercise are punished by the obligatory yellow and black kits, two colours that should in no circumstances be seen together outside of a wasp nest.

Hallam

Hallam have a particularly diverse look book, often seen swaggering round campus in full jersey attire with protein shake firmly in hand, either straight from the gym or straight from bed.

Luckily, they’re always careful to make sure casual attire is as well branded as possible. Notice the never ending sea of snapbacks and Jack Wills gilets; the latter of which are also courageously sported by male Hallam students as a perfect bicep-exposing compromise to other, more traditional outerwear.

By night they debut a whole host of bold fashion choices while frolicking around their standard haunt Embrace. It’s rumoured that you can spot a Hallam girl by the length of her skirt and boys can be seen a mile off in their garish Nike Airs, often accompanied by a predictably boisterous university based chant.

Then there are the ever popular, but still unacceptable, low cut vests. These are thought to be a wardrobe staple for approximately 50% of Hallam males, who seem to be under the impression that, if they’re okay on Geordie Shore, they’re also okay to be worn within the public domain. But then again, what’s the point in all that gym graft if you can’t see 80% of your torso at all times?
