Back and better than ever, the Christmas market

It’s back for 2013 with a vengeance and already making Belfast seem far more festive.

So has the market’s Christmas spirit been dampened the fleg related nonsense that cut it short last year? The Tab goes serious investigative journalist to test the waters (and potentially get pissed on flavoured beers).

The only downfall of the place is the sheer mammoth queues. You’ll get squished on the way in, squished on the way out, and somehow still be freezing. Even on a weekday, we faced waiting soberly outside the beer tent in turnstiles for about ten minutes (which when you’re desperate for festive booze, feels like forever).

Warning: waiting in line for beer will result in glum, un-festive expression.

Once inside it’s glorious of course. Take our advice, head for the favourite of many a Christmas drinker and get the strawberry beer (cool tankards only available before 6.30pm, apparently).

Unless you’re either very brave, very drunk or very stupid DO NOT drink the ‘World’s Strongest Beer’. It looks like piss and tastes like vodka and can only end badly.The other great thing about the flagship beer tent is that you will run into everyone you know.

For instance, here’s third year Politics student Fiona Montgomery. Despite being on Erasmus in Rotterdam this semester Fiona, back in Belfast for a few days, has made the Christmas market one of her first stops. That’s how much we love it.

If you’re not looking to get drunk, or have been struck down by the World’s Strongest Beer hangover, there’s plenty here to soak up the booze. If a kangaroo burger’s not your style, many an hour can be wasted drooling by the stall that sells this amazing fudge.

There may have been too much drooling last year, now they have an angry notice.
