The annual Kate Kennedy Procession is traipsing through the three streets this Saturday at 2pm, beginning at St Salvator’s College.
The event, drawing crowds every year, originated in the students’ adoration of Kate Kennedy, the niece of the founder of St Salvator’s College. In the parade this weekend, each club member dresses up as a noted figure from St Andrews history and eventually reveals Kate Kennedy, traditionally played by a male first-year. The succeeding adoration is very similar to that seen at the Lizard between two very drunk freshers.
The event is one of the most prominent examples of Town and Gown working together. Marshal of the Procession, Ted Haxby said, “This year’s Procession marks its 87th anniversary and it involves contributions from all parts of the town and the University. Above all, it is an event for the town and its surroundings to enjoy. I also hope that the Procession will raise significant amounts of money for charity.”
This year’s Kate Kennedy Procession will be one for the history books, as it will include the first ever girls admitted into the KKC. The two newest and most groundbreaking female members will be taking an active part in the parade on Saturday, yet another reason to celebrate, enjoy the sunshine (fingers crossed) and chuckle with men in drag.
