Read All About It… for £120,000
“Read so hard libraries are trying to fine me” – Bitches in Bookshops
For those of you who have ever had to sacrifice some of your beloved Raz budget to fork out for a library fine, the following cash figures will undoubtedly spark a potent mixture of interest and anger.
In the 2011/2012 academic year, UoL and JMU each raked in just under £120,000 worth of library fees, compared to Hope’s paltry £27,573.
The largest amount of UoL’s figure came from fees owed to the 24-hour loan section, in which £1 is added on to the initial £2 fine every day the book is still in the hands of the culprit.
A source stated students were well aware of their fines and sent daily reminders via email, yet students do not agree this justifies the pricey additional £1 fines.
Earlier this year, The Tab revealed the average library fine per student is £7.
UoL insists the money gathered from all fines is recycled back into the establishment for various uses. They proclaim the importance of ensuring books are “not monopolised by the few to the detriment of the many”.
So the next time you decide to take out a book from the library, make sure you return it before they can start burning a hole in your pocket.
