Annual Tough Guy Great Success

Sunday saw the annual Tough Guy event where a group of 52 current and former students from Loughborough University took part in what is advertised as the “safest most dangerous assault course in the world”.

A support crew of 23 students volunteered to help out the competitors before, during and after the race in South Staffordshire.

Rag Chair Max Turner, who was in charge of organising the event, spoke to The Epinal briefly after the finish and said:

‘‘No one got severely injured and today was a success, a huge thank you to everyone who has helped out.’’

Dominic Bosher who was the first member of Team Loughborough to walk through the finish line, completed almost the entire course without shoes after losing them before even getting to the obstacles.  Ezra Warren who came through second told The Epinal it was “the toughest challenge I’ve ever encountered, both mentally and physically. But the sense of achievement after the race is like no other.”

He continued:

“‘I managed a time of one hour and 46 minutes, but more importantly – I managed to get my rubber armbands and my shoe that came off three quarters of the way all the way to the finish line. Big thanks to all the support team as well. I will be going back next year to endure it all over again.”

We also asked Rob Martin, one of the competitors in today’s race about the best and worst parts of his day. He told us the best part was definitely the support from the crowd and the atmosphere created by other competitors.

“The cold was by far the worst, particularly after having to dunk your head into icy cold water four times in a row and moving inch think chunks of ice with your shins. I was completely disorientated at times.”
