I drank coconut water to see if it really does have ‘overnight’ effects on your skin

I gave up my usual skin care routine for three days

Coconut water has long been rumored to be healthy for your skin. I had heard from a coworker that it was supposed to give you OVERNIGHT results. Hydration in general is good for your skin so I supposed that it had some basis of fact behind it – but overnight results were hard to believe. So I decided to drink coconut water for three days and three nights and see just how quickly, and effectively, it invigorated my skin.

Personally, I never have had more than a sip of coconut water before this experiment. So I didn’t know much about the brands when I went into my local grocery store to buy some. I chose Zico Coconut Water because of the coconuts on the bottle, the lovely blue labeling, and the correct looking murkiness that I believe was coconut water’s thing. It cost $1.99 a bottle which I believe debunked the whole “coconut water is so expensive” assumption as that is the price of your typical water bottle. And yes, I felt very pure and hip and cool checking it out.

Day 1

I drank it with a straw. The thicker than water consistency was sort of freaking me out and I wanted it done. As for my skin, I usually wash my face and use face lotion morning and night but decided that for the duration of these three days I would give those two up, thus, letting the coconut water work its magic. I tend to have dryer sensitive skin, with some red bumps on my arms that I have had since I was a kid and I was hoping coconut water would help these blemishes.

Day 2

I was pretty scared about my facial skin quickly drying out without the use of my skin lotion I had been using every day for years, but surprisingly it seemed just as smooth as ever. Also, dare I say it, I thought my arms looked slightly less red but that could just be my internal longing speaking.

Day 3

Waking up my roommates on another early morning to take my picture was tough, they were beginning to not be so amused by my supposedly miraculous skin changes. I was excited though that I had not started to break out after not using my face wash for three days, and my skin didn’t even feel remotely oily or even dry. I was a little impressed by the coconut’s ways.

Results

Overall, there was not an earth-shattering change in the quality of my skin. I was however, impressed with my skin not drying out or getting a sudden burst of acne after three days – going on four – of not using my usual products to manage my skin. If I look from photo to photo though what I noticed the most was my usual bumps on my arm had noticeably faded and as someone who had basically given up on the possibility of their disappearance this made me pretty pumped.

While there is no argument that coconut water is not good for you, it just might not be quite as magical as one expects. It does contain a large amount of Vitamin C which is pretty vital for skin’s health, offering elasticity and protection. But, it will not give you enormous day to night results. If you love the taste of coconut water drink on my friends, but for those of you who find it has an awkward, nurturing taste, your skin won’t suffer because of it.
