We asked people what they think ‘The Establishment’ is

Spoiler alert: there wasn’t exactly a consensus


They’re the shadowy figure behind the curtain, the Wizard of Oz in the realm of US politics. They have bellowing voices commanding all of the money and power in the land. Their name is The Establishment.

When it comes to the 2016 presidential race, this one phrase “The Establishment” continues to come up over and over again. It’s not clear, however, if we can all agree on what the term means.

In other words, is everyone talking about the same thing? To find out we decided to ask people on the streets of New York what they think “The Establishment” means.

I think everyone considers the establishment a rigged machine. People who are in the establishment only care about benefitting the establishment and not how it affects others. The establishment is a word for the dirty government. The anti-establishment people want won’t just follow corporate interests.
