Durham Uni places in top five for 10 subjects, 2024 Guardian University Guide shows
Its physics department is second only to Oxford
Durham University has placed in the top five for 10 subject areas, a new league table shows.
The table, released by The Guardian today, rates UK universities on factors such as student satisfaction, student to staff ratios, and career and spending prospects.
Durham University, traditionally associated with humanities, placed fifth for classics and history, fourth for theology and third for english and for criminology.
However, it also placed highly in STEM subjects. Its economics and engineering departments were ranked fifth in the UK, its biology course was placed at fourth, and its accounting and finance degree at third.
The University also placed second for physics, with Oxford University coming first.
In spite of the recent marking and assessment boycott, during which some finalists at Durham University were unable to graduate, Durham University received one of the highest scores for student satisfaction with feedback.
During the boycott, Durham University pro-vice-chancellor Tony Fawcett admitted that the time may be “anxiety” provoking for students.
The University also scored third highest for the amount of first year students continuing to second year, beaten only by Oxford University and Cambridge University.
The general table did, however, show that Durham University fell one place in overall score, swapping with the University of Bath and moving from sixth to seventh.
A statement on Durham University’s website reads: “We’re delighted by these positive results, which consistently put us in the UK top 10 across three different prestigious league tables.”
