Ok, so the old man on TikTok isn’t actually 163 years old

The most popular person on TikTok right now isn’t the usual suspects, Charli D’Amelio or Khaby Lame. Nope in fact the person everyone is obsessing over is a very, very old man who is a monk lying in his hospital bed.

The videos are mainly just feature the old monk resting. The account @auyary13 has over 500,000 followers and is run by the monk’s granddaughter. There she gives followers updates on his health condition, which looks to be improving after a visit to hospital in January. The monk is reportedly called Luang Pho Yai and is said to be 163 years old.

The most popular TikToks of Yai have received millions of views and are full of comments of people joking about how old he is.

One person said Yai knew Adam and Eve, another joked he invented “terms and conditions” and another commenter said “bro saw big bang theory with his eyes”.

So is the TikTok monk actually 163 years old? This is everything we know:

Nope, sadly he is not 163 years old. However he’s not exactly young, when asked by a follower how old Yai is, his granddaughter replied saying he is 109 years old.

Many comments on the video question if Yai is in the process of Sokushinbutsu. Sokushinbutsu is a popular Buddhist practice in Japan which sees people enter mummification whilst still alive.

However this is not the case with Yai, he is very much alive. His granddaughter commented on one video asking people to have respect and he is not a corpse.

She said: “[He is] not a corpse … If you don’t like it, please scroll past and don’t comment anything like this 🥺”.

Yai is currently in hospital in Thailand after being taken in after breaking his hip bone in January this year.

And the wild thing is, he isn’t even the oldest person alive right now. That title goes to Kane Tanaka who is 119 years old and lives in Japan.

The oldest person to have ever lived is said to be Jeanne Louise Calment from France. She was born in 1875 and died at 122 years old in 1997.
