Everything Musharaf has been up to since finding Educating Yorkshire stardom 12 years ago
He's a total inspiration
When Musharaf Asghar first appeared on Educating Yorkshire back in 2013, it’s safe to say he captured the hearts of the nation.
Known lovingly as ‘Mushy’, he was the student who bravely tackled his stammer with the support of his teacher, Mr Burton, and who could forget that unforgettable scene with the headphones? Fast forward over a decade, and Mushy’s come a long way.
From TV appearances to standing on stages as a keynote speaker, he’s turned his once-silenced voice into one that inspires thousands. So, let’s take a look at what Mushy’s been up to since the school bell rang for the last time.
Mush is a motivational speaker
Yep, Mushy is officially a motivational speaker, and a brilliant one at that. Since leaving school, he got a degree in broadcast journalism. Since then, he’s been travelling the country, speaking to students, teachers, and big-time businesses.
He shares his personal journey with humour, honesty, and a whole lot of heart, focusing on things like resilience, confidence, mental health, and stammering.
He’s been booked by some big names, and his talks have helped loads of people feel more confident about their own struggles. Mushy’s message? Your voice matters, no matter how long it takes to get the words out.
He appeared on Lorraine
Remember the shy teen who couldn’t read aloud in class? Well, Mushy’s now been on live TV and totally owned it. He appeared on ITV’s Lorraine, chatting with Lorraine Kelly about how life has changed since Educating Yorkshire.
He spoke openly about the ups and downs of living with a stammer, how he stays confident, and why it’s so important to talk about these things. Watching him speak so calmly and clearly on national television was genuinely emotional and a massive moment for anyone who remembers his school days.
Podcasts and social media stardom
Mushy hasn’t just stuck to stages and TV, he’s jumped into the world of podcasts and social media too. He’s guested on a bunch of shows, chatting about everything from education to mental health, and giving proper relatable advice for young people trying to figure life out.
He’s also really active on social media. Musharaf shares funny clips, motivational posts, and little updates from his life on the road.
Whether he’s posting throwbacks to his school days or talking about a recent speech he’s given, the Channel 4 star’s online presence is super positive and down-to-earth.
He’s speaking up for others
The Educating Yorkshire star has become a real voice for people with speech disorders. He works closely with charities like STAMMA and Action for Stammering Children, raising awareness and pushing for better support for young people who stammer.
He often gets involved in campaigns, especially around International Stammering Awareness Day, and uses his platform to help people understand that a speech difficulty doesn’t mean you have nothing to say. He’s shown that you can absolutely lead with your voice, even if it takes a bit longer to come out.
Mush and Mr Burton reunited
One of the most heartwarming things Mushy’s done is head back to Thornhill Academy, not as a student, but as a guest speaker. He’s reunited with Mr Burton a few times too, and their friendship is just as lovely as ever.
They’ve even done interviews together, reflecting on how much that one classroom moment changed both their lives. Mushy now stands where his teachers once stood, inspiring students just like he used to be. Talk about a full circle moment.
