Meghan just revealed she changed her name from Markle, so what’s really going on?!
I did not expect that
Meghan Markle has just revealed she no longer has the surname we all address her with. She revealed on new Netflix reality show, With Love, Meghan, that she changed her name from Markle to Sussex. The whole keeping-her-title controversy has been in talks for ages, ever since Meghan and Harry decided to leave the royal family.

Umm, somehow we all missed that Meghan is no longer addressed as ‘Meghan Markle’. Instead, she’s called Megan Sussex, as she kindly pointed out on With Love, Meghan. She said ‘Sussex’ is the new family surname now belonging to her husband, Prince Harry, and herself, but it was literally the first we’d all heard of it.
We all done a double-take when Meghan corrected Mindy Kaling after she called her Markle. “You know I’m Sussex now,” Meghan pointed out. “You have kids and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children.’ I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me, but it just means so much to say, ‘This is our family name. Our little family name.'”
Basically, when Meghan married Harry in 2018, his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II gave them the titles Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It was an expected wedding present from the late Queen, who was 92 years old at the time, and obviously thought they’d have those royal titles for the rest of her life… until they left and went to America.
When Harry and Meghan resigned from their posts as senior royals and left the UK in 2020, the queen allowed them to remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but barred the couple from marketing themselves with those titles or otherwise profiting from them. But she’s now going by Meghan Sussex, the way her husband was once Harry Wales and doesn’t have an official surname.
Even Meghan and Harry’s children have new names
The best part for me was seeing what a beautiful life the Sussexes have built outside the viper’s nest. Their marriage is stronger than ever, Archie & Lili are thriving & they’re surrounded by an awesome, supportive community. #WithLoveMeghan #WithLoveMeghanOnNetflix pic.twitter.com/2TbYYegzWQ

When Meghan announced daughter Lilibet’s christening, the family revealed that the young royals were now named ‘Prince Archie of Sussex’ and ‘Princess Lilibet of Sussex’. Their kids used to be called Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, but in Meghan and Harry’s eyes, they’re now addressed differently.
“It’s our shared name as a family,” Meghan told People recently, “and I guess I hadn’t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children. I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.” Archie and Lilibet’s parents did not give them titles, and their great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II never insisted her great-grandchildren have them.
