Spider-Man just made a huge mistake in Brand New Day and it could change the X-Men forever

Spider-Man: Brand New Day might have introduced a new problem for Peter Parker that is much bigger than anything he’s faced before.

While the film focuses on Peter trying to rebuild his life after Spider-Man: No Way Home, he also creates something that could have massive consequences for the future of the MCU, especially now that mutants are finally entering Earth-616.

Peter Parker invents something that could change everything

After the world forgets Peter Parker’s identity at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter is left completely alone. In Brand New Day, things get even more complicated when his spider DNA starts changing. His powers begin becoming unstable, making him more like an actual spider than a normal human. His personality starts shifting, his spider-sense becomes stronger, and he even develops organic webs.

So, Peter looks for a solution. He turns to Bruce Banner for advice, asking how he managed to control his own transformations. During their conversation, Peter comes up with the idea of creating an inhibitor. It’s a device that could remove unwanted biological changes while keeping someone stable.

Basically, Peter wants a way to control his own powers and stop his body from changing. Sounds helpful, right?

Well, Peter accidentally creates a dangerous weapon

Peter successfully creates the inhibitor, and it works. It returns his powers to normal, fixing the changes caused by his spider DNA. But then Peter takes things one step further and creates a universal inhibitor.

Unlike the first version, this device can potentially suppress abilities in other enhanced humans whose bodies have been altered. And that’s where Peter’s big mistake comes in. Because in the wrong hands, this isn’t just a medical invention but a way to remove someone’s powers.

The biggest reason this invention could become a problem is Jean Grey. Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey introduces mutants into the MCU’s Earth-616 timeline, and Peter’s inhibitor is shown to work on her telepathic abilities.

Mutants are different from people like Peter Parker or Bruce Banner. Their powers come from the X-gene, meaning they were born with these abilities. For years in Marvel comics, one of the biggest conflicts between mutants and humans has been the fear of mutant powers and attempts to control or remove them.

So, the fact that Spider-Man, one of the MCU’s most trusted heroes, creates technology that can suppress mutant abilities is a pretty massive development.

Spider-Man could accidentally become part of the mutant conflict

The interesting thing is that Peter isn’t acting like a villain here. He is simply a scientist trying to fix a problem happening inside his own body. But Marvel has always loved stories where heroes create something with good intentions that later causes problems.

In the comics, Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four created Code-X, a device designed to hide mutant genes and prevent mutant abilities from working. The invention put Reed at odds with the X-Men because, even though he had his reasons, it crossed a dangerous line.

Now, the inhibitor could become exactly the kind of technology that anti-mutant groups would want. Basically, Peter may have created the thing that future villains use against the X-Men.

And the Department of Damage Control makes things even worse as it gets access to the technology. That is worrying because the organisation has already shown an interest in collecting, studying and potentially weaponising advanced technology. So, a device created by Spider-Man to help people could eventually become something used against them. Especially with the X-Men era just beginning.

For a hero whose biggest lesson has always been “with great power comes great responsibility,” this might be his biggest responsibility yet.
