*Warning: Spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Brand New Day* The cat’s out of the bag: Sadie Sink is, in fact, Jean Grey. While her performance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is receiving plenty of praise, some Marvel Comics fans aren’t too happy about the visuals – but there’s a good reason for it. Ever since the Stranger Things star was cast in the Spidey movie, the internet has been awash with speculation about who she’d play. From the very beginning, plenty of fans guessed it would be Jean due to the fact that the X-Men are now a part of the MCU, her natural red hair and the many industry insider reports suggesting this was the case. Singer-songwriter Steve Lacy, whose track ‘oh yeah?’ appears in the Tom Holland film, seemingly spoiled this on the red carpet, but still the studio remained tight-lipped. But now Brand New Day is in cinemas, we can confirm that the rumours were correct. As said, there’s plenty of hype about Sink’s performance and the future of the MCU with the X-Men in it. Another shared panels from the comics showing Jean using her cosmic pink powers, writing, “Do not expect pink powers from what I heard what you see in the trailer is what you get.” A third added, “One complaint is that I just wish we get the pink power for Jean Grey instead of a copy of Sue Storm’s power. Other than that, Sadie is awesome as Jean.” And a fourth chimed in, “They f**ked up by not giving her pink psychic powers.” But there’s a reason the Jean Grey we know from the comics looks so different to Sink’s iteration. In Brand New Day, this isn’t the all-powerful mutant fans are familiar with. Instead, she’s introduced before becoming part of the X-Men, with her telepathic abilities still developing throughout the film. As the story progresses, she becomes noticeably stronger and more confident in using her powers, suggesting this is only the beginning of her journey rather than the finished product. There’s also the fact that Brand New Day is deliberately a more grounded, street-level Spider-Man story. While Jean is one of Marvel’s most powerful mutants, her powers – initially telepathy – start out as weaker before evolving into telekinesis. Peter Parker remains at the centre of the action instead of immediately introducing the cosmic-scale visuals associated with later versions of the character, leaving plenty of room for her powers to evolve further if and when she returns alongside the X-Men. As one X user wrote in response to the complaints, “I understand your guys being annoyed but you have to remember when Jean Grey started out in the early days of the comics, she didn’t have a signature color until later on. “Maybe when she powers up in the future of the MCU, she’ll get her aura glowing signature pink color.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
