If you’ve watched Spider-Man: Brand New Day, one scene in particular had you no doubt thinking, “For free?!” Yes, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker’s feet get airtime, and apparently it wasn’t the easiest scene to film. Weeks before the latest Marvel movie swung into cinemas, there were talks of a NSFW scene between Spidey and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, and now it all makes sense. Early on in Brand New Day, Peter needs help with the mind-controlling opponent, and so he goes to see Yelena in her “office” – a Russian bathhouse. He obliges, although keeps his mask and boxers on. When they finally get down to business, Yelena suggests it’s not mind control but “possession”, and while they’re talking, Peter’s feet float to the surface of the water. The unexpected moment has sparked plenty of discussion and memes. “LOOK AT HIS BIG ASS TOES,” wrote one X user, while another said, “I think that one scene was just an excuse to show Tom Holland’s feet.” It’s even started a trend on TikTok where people are putting their feet up towards the cinema screen right at the end and taking a picture, resulting in a photo that shows the shadow of the person’s splayed-out digits. Why the scene was a pain to shoot Credit: Disney Given all of the action packed sequences in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, you might assume this scene was the easiest to shoot – but according to Holland, it was anything but. You see, the actor has a Spider-Man symbol tattooed on the bottom of his right foot, which he got to celebrate bagging the role many years ago. Little did he realise that it would cause issues for the team further down the line. For Brand New Day, the VFX team was forced to digitally remove the tattoo. “I have a tattoo, and a fun little story is that it’s on the bottom of my foot, it’s the Spider-Man emblem from the first movie. I have it all across the bottom of my foot,” he said. “And there’s a scene in the movie where I have no clothes on, and I’m hanging off the side of a building. It was very awkward to film. And in the VFX meetings, everyone was like, ‘Yeah, the wires are gone, looks great.’ But you could still see the tattoo on the bottom of my foot. “They’ve gotten rid of it now, but there was a time when they were looking at the finished movie, and it was like, ‘No, no, no, we need to paint that out.’” Credit: BackToTheMovies/YouTube Obviously, at the time of the interview, Holland wasn’t allowed to spill the beans on his scene with Yelena, but given the finished product and his squeaky clean soles, it looks like the VFX team had to work overtime to remove the tat. This wasn’t the only issue Holland had with this sequence. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the actor said that, knowing he was about to be shirtless, he avoided drinking water the day before filming to try and look more ripped. But it didn’t quite work out… “Besides absolutely loving working with Florence and the scene going incredibly smoothly and her being the funniest person in the room, I had tried to do that stupid dehydration thing for that scene, where I didn’t drink any water the day before and then I drank loads of water the day before that,” he said. “I tried to see if it would make a difference, and the only thing it did is it just made me really grumpy.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
