Amid the release of the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place finale, original star David DeLuise has clapped back at the spinoff series after he was snubbed from the third and final season. Season three of the sequel series consisted of a four-episode finale event that aired on the Disney Channel on Tuesday. Many of the original Wizards of Waverly Place stars returned, including Selena Gomez as Alex Russo, David Henrie as Justin Russo, and Gregg Sulkin as Mason Greyback. But one notable absence was David DeLuise, who played Justin and Alex’s father Jerry Russo and even reprised his role for a couple of episodes in season one. On Tuesday, Entertainment Tonight posted a behind-the-scenes video in which Gomez and Henrie discuss the finale and the continuation of Wizards. DeLuise took to the comments section and wrote, “It would not be over if the OG wizards were really there. Missed opportunity.” Alongside himself, Jake T. Austin didn’t return to the spinoff series as Max Russo. In response to a fan comment over a year ago, Austin said, “Max didn’t get the invite,” alongside a crying emoji. Jake T. A couple of weeks ago, People posted a reunion photo ahead of season three, with DeLuise commenting, “Sad I was not there.” His latest comment is also likely to fuel further speculation about his relationship with David Henrie in particular. Back in 2023, DeLuise and Harper Finkle star Jennifer Stone alluded to frustrations on their Wizards of Waverly Pod. More recently, fans also noticed DeLuise appeared to obscure Henrie with GIFs when reposting a cast photo on Instagram, prompting further discussion online.
