Jared Leto doc director shares dark theory on why allegations haven’t hurt his career

Following the fresh wave of allegations made against Hollywood star Jared Leto in a new documentary, the director has shared a sinister theory as to why his career hasn’t been impacted. 

Sexual misconduct allegations against the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman first received widespread public attention in June 2025, when an Air Mail investigation published accounts from nine women. 

The reporter of the story, Elena Clavarino, worked with BBC producer Jessica Sartenaer and Russell Brand: In Plain Sight director Alice McShane for Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret, which dropped on Wednesday. 

The BBC documentary includes allegations from 10 women who came forward, with four accusing Leto of criminal sexual misconduct when they were teenagers. 

Although the actor didn’t respond to the BBC, his rep shared the following statement with Film Shrine on his behalf: “I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false.”

The BBC said it counted 120 separate allegations made online relating to his behaviour towards women, which has begged the question of how Leto’s Hollywood career hasn’t been impacted. 

Despite the 2025 allegations, Leto remained as the lead in the 2025 movie Tron: Ares and played Skeletor in this year’s Masters of the Universe.

The director pointed to two main reasons

In a conversation with Variety, Alice McShane put forward a theory about why this is the case, suggesting it could be a combination of the culture surrounding the manosphere and pretty privilege. 

The interviewer pointed to the fact that Russell Brand is now facing criminal charges following In Plain Sight, but that the Air Mail investigation had little to no impact on Leto’s career. 

“It’s quite a mystery, isn’t it? There’s something about our culture at the moment – I think there’s something that I feel might be happening 10 years on from #MeToo. It just feels like the outrage about stories like this has slightly cooled,” McShane replied. 

“I think that also with the rise of the manosphere, and also people in very significant positions of power having had allegations leveled at them as well about their treatment of women, I think that in a way, these sorts of stories have been normalised in people’s minds.”

As a result, McShane believes these kinds of allegations “don’t get the traction perhaps that they would have done 10 years ago. “

While that’s one element, the director also theorised that Leto has partly been shielded from accountability by cultivating “this persona of this kind of weird, enigmatic, mysterious guy.”

“He’s also an incredibly good-looking man, and I think that there is an element of ‘pretty’ privilege here, and that that actually came through in a lot of the interviews with the women,” she continued.

This led to another talking point online: how Leto has remained looking so young, even now at age 54. 

“At one point I was thinking we should [show] stills of him each time we had a card that said ‘Leto was 34 at the time’ but if you put a picture of him up, he looks about 15, so I don’t think it really quite landed the point of how old he was,” McShane said.

The team details ‘radio silence’ from Leto

It’s unclear whether Leto’s career will face consequences now, or whether he might retaliate. McShane also revealed the lengths the team went to to get a response. 

“We gathered all the evidence, we put together the right of reply letter, which is a very lengthy document where we lay out in detail all of the women’s stories that we intend to include,” she said. 

“Usually in a current affairs film you give two weeks…so we sent it out on July 3, expecting it to be back on July 17. Our executive producer Mike Radford, he sent it directly to Leto via email and asked for confirmation of receipt, which didn’t come – and it didn’t come and it didn’t come.

“We contacted everybody that we knew that he was connected to – agents, lawyers, his long-time business partner, all of the associates that we could see that are still connected to him in recent times.”

And it was “radio silence across the board,” which McShane described as “quite strange.”

Although Leto’s rep has since responded to the media, the director said they’re yet to receive a reply. 

“So who knows what’s going to happen? We may get a letter. We may never get a letter. He may take us to court. He may not take us to court,” she continued. “But whatever eventuality that comes, we are prepared.”
