Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi epic, Disclosure Day, hit theatres last weekend, but the director and Emily Blunt seemingly disagree about a conversation they had about AI in the film.

Since Martin Scorsese and many other industry greats have begun to endorse the use of AI in film, many audience members have pushed back against it. Viewers are pointing out that the human creativity in films is what makes them an interesting art form, and are sharing their disappointment that creatives are turning to the dark side.

So when Emily Blunt said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that Steven Spielberg had suggested they use AI for the aliens’ voices in Disclosure Day, film fans were furious.

“He said, ‘You know, we could do it with AI, or you could do it’,” the actress said during their press tour. “And I was like, ‘I feel confident I can make some weird noises’.”

In the end, the alien noises were made organically by Emily, with a bit of movie-editing magic, like layering and pitch shifting.

“Clicking, humming, doing weird Barry White sort of low singing mixed with clicking with Morse code sounds,” Emily said. “I just tried everything. We sort of threw the kitchen sink at it, and I think he wanted it to sound mathematical and not too terrifying.”

But when speaking to ITV News, Steven Spielberg completely denied that this happened and said he would never have used AI for the film.

“I would never have made the choice, even if Emily wasn’t able to produce the sounds that she did produce by the way organically, I would never have used AI,” he said.

The director continued: “I would have gone the old-fashioned way – you get a dolphin, or you get an elephant, and you slow it down, you speed it up, you play it backwards. Gary Rydstrom, who designed the sound for the entire film, who has many Oscars for sound design, would have found a way if Emily couldn’t produce it.”

Even though they can’t seem to agree on whether a conversation about AI ever happened, it’s been confirmed that there is no AI in Disclosure Day.
