A trailer for the highly anticipated The Social Network sequel, The Social Reckoning, dropped last week, and lots of people are wondering why Jesse Eisenberg isn’t returning. It’s been sixteen years since David Fincher’s The Social Network released in theatres, and a lot has changed in our relationship with Facebook. In The Social Reckoning, the director will tell the story of the groundbreaking Facebook whistleblower, Frances Haugen, and an older Mark Zuckerberg. But noticeably, Jesse Eisenberg won’t be making a return as Zuck – replaced by Succession star Jeremy Strong. Screenplay writer Aaron Sorkin spoke to Vanity Fair about his attempts to bring Jesse back to the project and why he ultimately said no. “I felt like it belonged to him, and he was certainly battle-tested,” he said. “He simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore, that he has his problems with the guy. He doesn’t like kids coming up to him in airports with business cards that say ‘I’m CEO, bitch’ for him to sign.” That didn’t stop Aaron from badgering Jesse for three days to reprise his breakout role. In the end, the role was given to the incredibly talented Jeremy Strong, who is known for his method acting and dedicated performances. via Sony Pictures “He showed up on his first day, and when he said ‘good morning’ to me, he was already talking like Mark,” Aaron said. Alongside Jeremy, Oscar-winning actress Mikey Madison will be playing Frances Haugen, and spoke to Vanity Fair about how important it is for her to tell her story accurately. “I have so many questions for Frances; I hope to ask her one day,” she said. “Mostly, I hope she feels that we captured the spirit of her bravery and that she knows how much Aaron and I care about her.” The Social Reckoning will be in cinemas on 9th October 2026.
