Okay, so no pets were harmed in the making of the cat sandwich, but the Obsession prop master has revealed how it was made for the film – and it may leave you feeling a little queasy. Given Curry Barker’s breakout horror hit was made on a tiny budget of just $750,000, there were no funds for fancy CGI or expensive materials. But if anything, Obsession is made all the more iconic for this exact reason. Prop master Luke Cull appeared on movie YouTuber Marco Galvan’s channel to talk about all the behind the scenes secrets, and how they turned everyday items into legendary horror imagery. One of those is, of course, the moment Wish Nikki (Inde Navarrette) decides to make a packed lunch for Bear (Michael Johnston). He tucks into the sandwich as Sarah (Megan Lawless) looks through the little notes and polaroid pictures left by Nikki. As she reads them out, Bear has a horrifying realisation: The meat Nikki used for the sandwich comes from his recently deceased cat. Luke revealed how this scene came about, saying that in the original script, it was actually “chicken” and rice. But about a week before filming, they were doing trials with the dish and unsure about the results. Production designer Vivian Gray and Curry put forward the idea of it being a sandwich, leading to a back and forth about what meat they should use. “We ended up using canned lunch meat. It wasn’t even spam. It was like a knockoff of spam. It was called literally ‘lunch meat in a can’. It was kind of like an MRE or something… Really not the kind of meat you’d want to eat anyways,” Luke said. To give it more of a grey tone, they used coffee creamer and food colouring. And if you thought that sounded awful, Luke needed to “slick it up” – and so they slathered the grey lunch meat with K-Y Jelly. knew this man was fucked up when he took a bite of (and swallowed) hairy cat meat sandwich pic.twitter.com/GNOHddmjOQ — mcka ☕️ (@secretmcka) June 6, 2026 During one particularly odd moment, Luke recalled, “I had these gloves on and I was kind of massaging the meat with coffee creamer and K-Y Jelly in this little box where I was doing my nefarious deeds. “I remember because that was the day that Andy Richter was on set and I’m a huge fan of Andy Richter and Conan. He walked by and he was like, ‘Oh, what are you doing?’ And I was like, ‘Making a cat sandwich.’ And he went, ‘Nice’ and walked away. “I was like, ‘I made it. I’m in the movies.’ It was the coolest thing for me.” Luke noted that while the sandwich was technically edible, Michael never actually had to take a bite of the lunch meat monstrosity – instead he ate a regular sandwich. Clearly their work paid off, as it’s one of the most iconic (and nauseating) scenes in the whole movie. As Luke said, “I think that’s the prop that I’m most proud of.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
