Explained Film Horror Obsession

This Obsession theory about Bear’s cat is wild, but the ‘evidence’ is so convincing

It makes the film even creepier

Obsession has inspired so many different theories and hot takes, but this new theory about Bear’s cat and Nikki is on a whole other level.

Curry Baker’s debut feature film, Obsession, has been a huge box office success. The psychological thriller follows Bear, who makes a cursed wish for his longtime crush, Nikki, to love him “more than anybody in the world”. Her obsessive love slowly ruins both of their lives, and by the end of the film, Bear definitely regrets his wish.

One key character in the film who never gets any screen time while it’s alive is Bear’s cat, Sandy. Early on in the film, Sandy breaks into Bear’s pill bottle and dies after ingesting them. But the dead cat keeps showing up throughout the film in various ways, thanks to Nikki.

Some people think Nikki was possessed by the spirit of Bear’s dead cat

TikTok user @President_Baw shared his theory that the “entity” which takes over Nikki in Obsession is the spirit of Bear’s dead cat. Yes, I’m aware of how mad that sounds, but when he broke down the details, I started to question myself.

Sandy had died the same day Nikki was possessed, meaning that her “spirit” could have lingered in the area. And it’s hard to deny just how strange possessed Nikki’s continual obsession with Sandy is, from creating a shrine for her to putting Sandy’s remains in his sandwich at lunch. The real Nikki leaves a note inside the lunch box saying “it’s not me”, placed right on top of the cat sandwich. Was she possibly hinting at what had taken over her?

Not convinced? Me neither, to be honest, but wait, there’s more. Nikki’s behaviour, like standing in the corner at night and watching Bear sleep, waiting all day by the door for him, ambushing Sarah in the car… all very cat-like.

After all, who else would love you more than anybody else in the world than your pet who depends on you?
