Kaia Gerber has weighed in on who The Shards’ mysterious Trawler is, and ‘it’s not obvious’

Even though the Trawler wasn’t revealed, people are still going to talk about that ending of Ryan Murphy’s The Shards, and now Kaia Gerber has weighed in on who she thinks the killer actually is. 

The finale ended with the police questioning the main characters after Terry’s death, leaving Bret, Robert, Debbie, Steven, Thom, Ryan and Susan as possible suspects. Susan was also attacked, adding even more mystery to the cliffhanger and making it seriously hard to figure out who can actually be trusted.

So, who does Kaia Gerber think the killer is?

Kaia Gerber told The Hollywood Reporter, “I don’t know who did it, but I have my suspicion, for sure. And it’s not an obvious one.”

“There are so many theories, too, I’ve read all the Reddit threads. I get a new conspiracy theory every time,” she said.

She also questioned whether Thom is the attacker. Susan’s own attack in the finale has made Thom one of the obvious suspects. In the book, Susan and Thom are attacked together by the possible killer. The show changes the scene, with Susan being attacked while Thom arrives later.

Gerber said, “When we filmed it, I was so certain it wasn’t Thom. Mainly because Graham wasn’t there. But then when I watched the finale, I was like, ‘I think it might be Thom, actually!’”

She added, “So, the jury is still out, but I convinced myself that it was Thom for the sake of Susan then accusing Thom.”

The finale also puts Susan herself on the suspect list, which Gerber admitted was surprising. When it was pointed out that Susan seems like one of the least likely people to be the killer, Gerber agreed.

She said, “I agree with you there! But really, we’re like: It could be any of us.”

“It’s hard for me to empathise with Susan in certain moments. The relentless winning is infuriating,” she said. “Especially because I care about Debbie and Hayes. So I like that everyone is very complicated and layered in their own ways.”

Ryan Murphy has a bigger idea behind the Trawler

Kaia Gerber was also asked about Ryan Murphy’s comments on the AIDS epidemic and the Trawler being connected to that fear.

She said, “Hearing Ryan talk about particularly the metaphor for AIDS and what AIDS meant to him, and that AIDS was quite literally a thing killing beautiful young people in the ‘80s. People who felt untouchable and invincible.”

She added, “That doesn’t have to be at the forefront of your mind while watching it. But I do think it’s really interesting to think about how that is a thing that it could be a metaphor for.”

As for whether the show will eventually reveal one of the characters as the Trawler, Gerber said, “I think so, yes. One-hundred per cent. That’s why you do a mystery and a thriller.”
