All the reasons Jeremiah shouldn’t have proposed to Belly in The Summer I Turned Pretty
That ring was actually not an engagement ring
Season three of The Summer I Turned Pretty wasted no time diving into emotional chaos, and at the centre of it all is Jeremiah’s sudden and wildly questionable proposal to Belly. After everything they’ve been through, the cheating, the miscommunication, the near-death trauma, his decision to propose felt rushed, immature, and honestly, hard to root for.
Although Gavin Casalegno is a good husband, the character he plays is definitely not. So, here are all the reasons why Jeremiah shouldn’t have proposed to Belly in The Summer I Turned Pretty:
He cheated on Belly twice

First and most importantly, he cheated. Not once, but twice. He planned a whole trip to Cabo without inviting Belly because she “doesn’t like his frat bros,” told her last minute, they had a fight, and broke up. Then he slept with another girl while he was there and later tried to say it was okay because “they were on a break.” This isn’t Friends, Jeremiah. Grow up.
Even Lola Tung, who plays Belly, agrees. She told ELLE, “No matter whether you think that he cheated or not, it’s wrong. I personally don’t think they were on a break or broken up. That argument was so quick, and everything happened so fast.” This is one of the main reasons why Jeremiah shouldn’t have proposed to Belly in The Summer I Turned Pretty.
He proposed seconds after they got back together

The cheating alone should’ve disqualified him from proposing, but he didn’t even wait. No proving he’s changed. No working to rebuild trust. Just “Sorry I cheated, will you marry me?” Like… what?
The timing was horrendous

Steven had just woken up from a coma after a near-fatal accident. Belly was scared, shaken, and incredibly vulnerable. She didn’t want to lose someone else she loved. And that’s when Jeremiah chose to propose? It felt manipulative, not romantic. If hot cocoa had proposed to her in that moment, she might’ve said yes to that too.
There was no ring at first, and then that ring

Look, Belly is not materialistic. We know that. But the ring is symbolic. It’s not just about size, it’s about effort. First, he didn’t even have one when he proposed. Then he showed up with a stacking ring. Yes, it’s pretty, but it’s not an engagement ring. It’s literally the Catbird Diamond Fizz Sparkler Ring, retailing at a casual $298. It screams, “I didn’t think this through.”
He’s in major debt

Jeremiah’s dad might have money, but Jere? Not so much. He’s repeating a semester because he missed an email, racking up another $20k in debt. People say Belly doesn’t care about money, fair. But again, what money? He’s broke, and now planning a wedding?
They’re still in college

Belly’s in her final year, Jeremiah’s a super senior. Neither of them have a stable job or a long-term plan. They still need to figure out their futures, their careers, where they’ll live, everything. This proposal wasn’t a mature commitment. It was another impulsive Jeremiah moment that just proves how not ready he is for marriage.
Proposing to someone you just cheated on, while broke, mid-crisis, and in college, with a stacking ring, is not the move.
Let Belly breathe.
