Bieber to Lautner, Selena Gomez’s relationship history is brimming with your childhood crushes

Selena Gomez might now be settling down with Benny Blanco, but I for one am going to miss her dating just about every childhood heartthrob, from Taylor Lautner to Nick Jones and – of course – the Biebs himself.

Last week, news broke that Benny put a ring on it after months of speculation about a possible proposal. We are yet to receive more details, including whether it was sponsored by Taco Bell, but there’s never been a better time to walk down memory lane and take a look at Selena’s impressive dating history.

1. Nick Jones

Looking back now, the Disney Channel studios were a massive dating pool. From Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens to Miley Cyrus and Nick Jonas, it’s remarkable that any of their shows made it to TV screens.

In 2008, speculation surrounding Nick and Selena was seemingly confirmed when she appeared in the music video for Burnin’ Up. They dated on and off for around two years before finally separating for good.

Looking back on the romance, Selena told Capital FM in 2015: “We were babies! We actually caught up the other day, and it’s really fun to be able to do that. That, to me, was like puppy love. It was very sweet. He’s lovely. I do have a love for him for sure.”

2. Taylor Lautner

In 2009, in between one of Selena and Nick’s will-they won’t-they breaks, she was connected to Twilight star Taylor Lautner. They reportedly met through Taylor’s co-star Kristen Stewart but they were never that serious.

“We would go out to lunch and dinner, but I knew he had paparazzi following him and I had paparazzi following me,” she told Seventeen in 2009. “So we literally just wanted to hang out, go bowling and stuff, and it went a little too far, I think. People were getting a little crazy about us.”

Selena Gomez’s most famous relationship is undoubtedly with Justin Bieber. They were first connected back in 2010, with the relationship being confirmed a year later when they were spotted kissing on a yacht in St. Lucia.

Looking back it’s difficult to remember how many times they split up and rekindled their romance, but the first came in 2012. They reconnected a year later but that attempt only lasted four months before the subsequent split.

From 2013 to 2015 they split up a number of times as they both confessed to being too young to navigate such a serious relationship. After their final attempt failed in 2018, Justin married his current wife Hailey just six months later.

Though the relationship seems to be very much in the past, some people on Instagram think Justin is sending her secret messages. It’s never going to end, is it?

5. Zedd

Selena’s relationship with DJ Zedd occurred during one of her famous breaks from Justin. The relationship only lasted from January 2015 to June of the same year, though it seems to have ended amicably.

“I adore Anton [Zedd] a lot and I definitely had a thing with him, which was nice,” she told The Edge Afternoons.

6. Samuel Krost

At about the same time Selena was forced to deny romance rumours with Niall Horan in 2015, she was pictured with Gigi Hadid’s friend Samuel Krost. Their fling only lasted a few months before fizzling out.

“Selena is a real girl with a real heart and real feelings,” Sam said on Instagram following the breakup. “All you superficial who are just unhappy with your love lives, understand that love is real. Although we have ventured on separate paths, at least I know that love exists. I love you, Sel.”

7. Charlie Puth

Our next stop on the Selena Gomez relationship history train is fellow singer Charlie Puth, who Selena may (or may not have) dated in 2016. Though she never spoke about the relationship, Charlie claimed it “messed me up” in a 2018 interview with Billboard.

He said: “I don’t kiss and tell, but the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes.

“And that’s what was happening. Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up. I’m trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in — what I was getting myself into.”

8. The Weeknd

For 10 months in 2017, Selena Gomez had a relationship with The Weeknd, real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye. They attended the Met Gala together, got hot and heavy in Italy, and shared countless swoon-worthy snaps on Instagram.

Due to difficult schedules, they separated in October 2017 but are still close friends.

9. Rumours are plentiful when it comes to Selena Gomez’s relationship history

If you asked any of the parties they would deny it, but the internet was rife with Orlando and Selena dating rumours back in 2014. The rumours continued well into 2016 as they were pictured out and about with one another, but at the same time Katy Perry issued a statement on Twitter that declared the rumours “conspiracy theories.” Selena retweeted, seemingly putting that topic to bed.

Despite being very close friends, Selena Gomez and Niall Horan have also been forced to deny they are in a relationship several times over the years. The same could be said of Selena with Zayn Malik, with insiders claiming they were growing close.

Similarly, in 2023 sources claimed that Selena and Drew Taggart were in a relationship, something neither party have confirmed nor denied.
