I tried every food stall at the York Christmas markets so you don’t have to
Officially in a food coma
Like most students in York, I needed to escape the looming deadlines of December and decided that the best way to do this was to eat my feelings at the Christmas markets.
It’s safe to say that my bank account has not thanked me for this trip. However, after yet another episode of me talking excessively to my Uber driver, I’ve since learnt that each stall has to pay around £10,000 for six weeks! So to be honest, I won’t begrudge them.
Note to self: Do not go to the markets on a weekend if you have issues with patience and the general public, you will lose the will to live.
Churros
I could smell this stall before I even arrived at the markets. Possibly the best thing I’ve ever tasted. Topped with cinnamon, sugar and your choice of chocolate, they really are the world’s best churros. Perfect for a sweet treat after your meal at the market.
Pasta
If you’ve ever been to the aesthetic restaurant Lucia in town, you’ll know that they are famous for their Italian dishes. Well, Lucia has a stall this year and the pasta did not disappoint! To top it all off the pasta is cooked in a massive wheel of real cheese which somehow makes it 10 times more appealing.
Cut and Craft
If you are extremely fussy about how you like your steak cooked do not order one as they don’t ask you. Completely fair with how many people were queuing up for their food. However, Cut and Crafts steak and chips with gravy was still 10/10.
Hot chocolate
Most Read
To be honest, I just needed something warm to hold at this point. That’s £5 I’ll never see again for a perfectly average, lukewarm hot chocolate. Though I fear it has to be done in order to complete the Christmas market experience.
Yorkshire Roast Company
A roast in a wrap. It sounds awful but honestly one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. All the trimmings piled into one big Yorkshire pudding… heaven. Would highly recommend.
Brownies
These brownies go very quickly so if you want to see all the selections, I would go early to this stall. It did take me about half an hour to choose which one but eventually I went with the Lotus Biscoff brownie (suffice to say I felt sick five minutes after demolishing the entire thing).
Swedish meatballs
This is basically Ikea café in a stall. For those that have never been to Ikea (sincerely hoping that everyone reading has because otherwise what are you doing with your life) it consists of chips, meatballs and a creamy gravy sauce. It tastes better than it sounds, trust me.
You’re welcome in advance for such an extensive review. Warning: Please do not try all of the above in one sitting and make sure that you take out another student loan to cover the cost of such an expensive trip. Otherwise, it was a very wholesome and fulfilling activity that I think has to be ticked off the York uni student bucket list.
