All the best (and worst) dressed celebs at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2024

The MTV Europe Music Awards 2024 went down in Manchester last night. Taylor Swift won the most awards, although she didn’t actually show up personally, as she was too busy watching the football man run about in Kansas. The outfits of the celebs who did bother to turn up varied significantly.

Here’s a rundown of the best, worst and most neutrally dressed celebs at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2024.

3. Maya Jama

It’s hard to make a black safety pin dress look cool in this millennium, but our queen Maya Jama seems to have managed it. She looks so elegant in this reimagining of That Dress of Elizabeth Hurley’s.

2. Rita Ora

The singer hosted the awards show, so she cycled through many, many outfits. She rocked up to the red carpet in a dusty pink feather dress which remarkably managed to be neither boring nor ugly. A rare achievement for dresses at awards shows.

The black suit she wore for her heartbreaking tribute to Liam Payne was really graceful.

Tyla never fails to slay with her fits. I actually really love this dress and wish I was cool enough to casually rock up to the pub in it. Tyla’s outfit has a really interesting backstory too – Aaliyah wore a near-identical yellow and black version of this dress to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000.

It turned out to be a pretty great night for Tyla. Her performance of Water and PUSH 2 START slayed. She then won three awards at the MTV Europe Music Awards, and became the first African artist to do so.

1. Molly Marsh

Do I love it? Do I hate it? In the end, I couldn’t decide so I shoved this dress in its own truly neutral neutral category. Don’t get me wrong, the lesser Love Island Molly looked as stunning as always. But the dress looks a bit like she had an office Christmas party to get to and this was the only thing left in Next. I don’t dislike the dress. I’m just a bit surprised to see it on someone who’s made a career from being influential fashionabley.

3. Raye

If I saw someone rock up to Tesco wearing this I would think, “damn, you are a very vibey cottagecore boho queen.” But she’s not running errands, she’s at a music awards show. I didn’t realise it was possible to make diamonds look low-effort until now.

Raye then swapped to an even more stripped-back version of the dress for her performance.

2. Shawn Mendes

10/10 for creativity

Ah, a man in a black tuxedo and white shirt. Absolutely ground-breaking. Truly, Shawn Mendes is pushing against all the conventional boundaries of modern fashion here.

Please please please could men at awards shows show some taste and have the good grace to wear something a bit shorter or sweeter? It really is slim pickings. It can’t be a coincidence that most men’s red carpet outfits are dumb and not poetic. Don’t smile.

To be fair, it would be against their branding if they didn’t wear terrible outfits. I wasn’t really sentient when Jedward were cool, so maybe their matching suits are peak 2000s nostalgia for some people? But to those of us younger than Legally Blonde, the outfits just look weird.
