MAFS UK groom Luke Worley loses lawsuit against old employer EE for taking time off to film TV show
Apparently reality dating shows aren’t a ‘legitimate’ reason to skip work
Luke Worley, who made a somewhat memorable appearance in MAFS UK 2023, lost a lawsuit against the company who fired him for appearing on TV.
So, in 2021, Luke was a manager at the EE store in Basildon, Essex. He was invited to be a contestant on The Language of Love – the Channel 4 dating show with Davina McCall which sets up couples who don’t speak the same language. He asked his boss if he could take leave from work to film the show in Spain from 13th to 22nd September. His boss said no, but Luke jetted off to Spain anyway. EE then fired him.
The MAFS UK grrom Luke sued EE for unfair dismissal, breach of contract and disability discrimination. The judge dismissed all three claims and said reality dating shows weren’t a “legitimate” reason to miss work.
Luke’s argument was that he didn’t show up to work because of a communication issue. He claimed his dyslexia prevented him from understanding EE’s rules about time off. The court couldn’t find any evidence that Luke had been diagnosed with dyslexia. Luke then said a fire at his home had “destroyed his personal medical records that may have supported his case at face value”. The judge did not seem to be impressed with this argument.
Luke made sure to quit his next job as an IT salesman before going on MAFS UK in 2023. He was matched with Jay, but then removed from the show after fighting with Jordan.
