Nicholas Chavez admits he ’empathises’ with Erik and Lyle Menendez following Monsters
‘I really sympathise with the brothers’
Nicholas Chavez who plays the role of Lyle Menendez in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story has admitted that he really “empathises” with both of the brothers following filming for the Netflix series.
In an interview with People, Nicholas Chavez explained how much he “sympathises” for both Lyle and Erik Menendez, explaining: “I really sympathise with the brothers. The fact that this was the most traumatic moment of their life, and then having that put on television for the world to see. I would imagine that would be incredibly heavy.”
The real life Erik recently criticised how he and Lyle were portrayed in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story in a Facebook post. He declared: “I believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show.”
Whilst his co-star Cooper Koch did visit Erik in prison, Nicholas insisted that he hadn’t spoken to Lyle at all throughout the filming process, saying: “No, I did not” when asked if he’d talked to him.
He went on to say that he thinks the responses to the show so far have been “varied” but that’s the whole point of the show. He explained: “It’s sensitive subject matter and I imagine that everyone is forming their own interpretations of what happened as we imagined and intended that they would.”
