Let’s be real, the best character in House of the Dragon is Bobby, the stray dog turned star

I’ll give Bobby the Iron Throne any day

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that the dog in House of the Dragon is undoubtedly the best character in the whole show. We first see the stray dog during Blood and Cheese, with fans being outraged by the fact the dog got kicked whilst doing absolutely nothing. But fear not, Mark Stobbart who played Cheese clarified on Instagram: “Let’s chill about the dog! We were best pals. No canines were launched in anger.”

We next see the dog during episode five when the decomposed body of Cheese is taken down and hauled away in a cart. The dog is as loyal as ever, and follows behind the cart, with director Claire Kilner explaining: “He’s such a loyal dog who has been just waiting for his master. He’s been watching over him the whole time.”

But who actually is the good boy behind the dog in House of the Dragon? From his sad start in life to his newfound Hollywood fame, let’s find out!

Bobby was originally found as a stray dog in 2019 on the streets of Cyrpus where he was wandering alone before being rescued by a local charity. He was very quick to learn so the charity contacted animal trainer Julie Tottman to ask whether she’d be interested in homing and training him.

She decided to audition him for the role of Buddy in the 2021 live action version of Cruella with Emma Stone, and he got the part. Julie revealed: “When they found him he was extremely underweight, and nervous of men, indicating he had been mistreated. He was a typical scabby street dog, he’s still got scars.”

House of the Dragon fans weren’t the only ones who were utterly taken with Bobby the dog, as it seems author George R.R. Martin was as well! He wrote in his blog: “The show added a brand new character as well. The dog. I am… ahem… not usually a fan of screenwriters adding characters to the source material when adapting a story. Especially not when the source material is mine. But that dog was brilliant. I was prepared to hate Cheese, but I hated him even more when he kicked that dog.

“And later, when the dog sat at his feet, gazing up… that damn near broke my heart. Such a little thing… such a little dog… but his presence, the few short moments he was on screen, gave the ratcatcher so much humanity. Human beings are such complex creatures. The silent presence of that dog reminded us that even the worst of men, the vile and the venal, can love and be loved. I wish I’d thought of that dog. I didn’t, but someone else did. I am glad of that.”

Now someone go get him a dragon bone to chew on!
