Helaena’s actress subtly shades House of the Dragon for lack of interaction with Dreamfyre

If there’s one thing we certainly didn’t get enough of this season of House of the Dragon it was seeing Helaena and her dragon Dreamfyre interact. Despite being an avid dragon rider in the House of the Dragon books, Helaena didn’t ride on Dreamfyre once during the whole season!

Fans are frustrated that the show has painted Helaena, who loves animals and insects, as someone who apparently “isn’t into” dragon riding. I mean c’mon who wouldn’t be into riding your own dragon?! It seems like we’re not the only ones who feel annoyed over this decision by the writers as Phia Saban, who plays Helaena in House of the Dragon has spoken out about her feelings about her lack of interaction with Dreamfyre.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Phia was asked: “Helaena doesn’t want to ride her dragon into battle, but do you? How do you feel about missing out on the big dragon battles so far?”

The actress responded: “Yeah! It’s House of the Dragon, and I’ve got a dragon, and I haven’t got on it. I’m rusty. I really wanted to get on the dragon. I went and watched a few people on the buck this season, and I was so jealous.

“I’d really love to get on the dragon, or at least have a scene with Dreamfyre. Dreamfyre, like Vhagar, she’s super ancient and big and cool. I’d like to see Helaena and Dreamfyre having a sort of spiritual connection, but I’m not complaining. I’m just happy to be here.”

In another chat with Decider, Phia described how “sad” she feels that her character doesn’t interact with Dreamfyre. She was asked by the interviewer: “I’m going to start with a very nerdy question that’s been on my mind since the finale. We’re told Helaena has bonded with Dreamfyre, but she hates riding. So how do you see that bond, that connection between Helaena and Dreamfyre?

Phia responded: “Yeah. Sometimes it’s too sad for me to imagine. I mean, think that we see about Helaena, that she has an affinity sometimes more to creatures than she does to human beings. So I think that we can safely imagine that it’s a very loving, sort of, soul-connecting relationship.

“I don’t know. I always feel like, isn’t it about horses? They say that they’re so relaxing to be around because they’re like pure empathy? I can only imagine that a lovely dragon would be the same way. Yeah, I’d like to see Helaena and her dragon, but apparently she’s not into that.”
