These are the highest paying companies in the UK this year

Career goals

If you want to make real money then you should be working in consulting, banking or tech. That’s what new figures from Glassdoor suggest, after a nationwide survey of the UK’s top companies.

At the top of the list is SAP – one of the largest software companies in the world. The average base salary there is £75,000. To put that in perspective, the national average is just £27,600.

Unsurprisingly Facebook and Google turn up on the list, but more tech businesses made the top ten than any other sector.

Deutsche Bank is the place to work if you’re working in finance, with an average base salary of £65,000. Meanwhile in the consulting world it’s all about McKinsey & Company or Boston Consulting Group. The median pay there is around the £80,000 mark.

Despite all being the highest paying employers in the UK, only Nomura International has its global headquarters in London.

“A huge contributing factor to high salaries is the development of technology tied to in-demand global skills, said Glassdoor’s Chief Economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain. “Economists often refer to this as the ‘superstar effect’.

“Tech salaries in particular tend to be high because of a shortage in specialist skills such as software development and programming, with a bidding war for these workers now underway. Barriers to entry at consulting firms mean that many loyal clients stay with specialists for a number of years because of their extensive contacts base, and bankers are of course still receiving hefty bonuses as successful traders bring huge company returns.”
