Five 50th Anniversary Events Under a Fiver

The Tab brings you its pick of five events from this Saturday’s 50th celebration, costing under a fiver.

Like many of our parents, UEA turns 50 this year. We’re sure you’ll be too busy spending your Saturday studying to attend every event of the day-long bonanza, but here’s five cheapy ones that we think will take your fancy…

Multiculturalism, 3pm – FREE

Lecture Theatre 1, Group study space. Bob Stillwell, School of Political, Social and International Studies.

Part of UEA’s appeal is the array of students. Educational experiences can occur in lecture theatres, and in kitchens by chatting to a flat mate on a semester abroad. To students, cultural diversity moulds experiences, but to some it threatens and intimidates. This lecture examines the expansion of cultural diversity within society.

Is UEA your University?, 3pm – FREE

Lecture Theatre 1, Reading Room. Julie E Bounford, School of Education and Lifelong Learning.

We’re all fiercely proud of our University’s status as one of the top in the country for student satisfaction, but UEA’s influence spreads further than campus. For 50 years UEA has been making connections allowing for research, scientific breakthroughs and unique educational experiences. This leads us to question what ownership we have over the University. Does it belong to us, or do we live off it’s status?

Video Diaries. Rolling activity, drop in between 10.30am – 4.30 pm – FREE

Thomas Paine Study Center foyer.

Slightly less intense, Thomas Paine’s foyer lets us realise our childhood dreams of making a time capsule, albeit through slightly more flashy medium. Questioning UEA’s future, come vox-pop your thoughts and ideas, and leave those in the future puzzling over 2013 uni-speak. YOLO!

Art and the Body. 12.30pm – 2pm – FREE

Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, tour from main reception.

Sainsbury Centre UEA

In a campus where everyone seems to have a little ink, from a dainty flower to a full sleeve, how can we consider the evolution of body art across cultures? Beginning with mummification the tour shows us how body modification has developed through time and space.

Margaret Thatcher: Queen of Soho By Jon Brittain. 7.45pm – 8.15pm. Matthew Tedford as Margaret Thatcher. £5.00 (full price), £3.50 (concessions)

Swap your Saturday night pre drinks for a trip to the theatre and relax your brain post-freshers. Following Maggie’s death this year, how would British politics have panned out had she swapped her cabinet ministers for heels and high kicks? Three months after Theater 503‘s ThatcherWrite Festival, Queen of Soho looks to the possibility of the Iron Ladies life as a cabaret star, performed by a cast of UEA drama grads.

And Finally…

Eddie Izzard – Stripped: Tout en Français. UEA Drama Studio, £10.

Slightly pricier, Legendary comic Eddie Izzard commands UEA for one of the celebration’s highlights. An honorary alumni, Izzard performs entirely in French, but it will definitely be worth the money and translation issues for a night of laughter. Even if your linguistic skills only extend as far as “another beer please”. At the time of publication tickets had unfortunately sold out, but hit up the UEA ticket exchange for the chance at a last minute ticket.
