To Rate Your Shag Or Not?

Mortifying to say the least, we’re glad Rate Your Shag has been taken down.

We’ve had ‘Spotted’ and ‘What Exam Students Do Say’, but was the latest instalment, ‘Rate Your Shag’, a step too far?

Liverpool Uni’s ‘Rate Your Shag’ Facebook page has rightly been taken down after receiving complaints it encourages bullying. It also encourages bullshitters.

We all love a bit of ‘Spotted’ as a break from revision – procrastination at its best. And those Inbetweeners memes on ‘What Exam Students Do Say’ offer entertainment on that rainy Monday morning in the Sydney Jones.

Despite these pages making us more conscious of wearing multicoloured hareems on Smithdown or opening sour cream and onion Pringles in the library for fear of becoming a ‘Spotted’ victim, they serve their purpose as a piss take.

Such pages have inspired the now removed ‘Rate Your Shag’. It’s not really hard to see why; the pages shouldn’t have been put up in the first place.

Surely a page where people can laugh at other people’s sex lives is taking the ‘Spotted’ idea too far? Most of us would see the page as it was meant to be seen, as a way to procrastinate and laugh at embarrassing stories. Unfortunately, there are that small minority who will take it too far and exploit people’s private lives, without their permission, to get a laugh.

How would you feel if that one time (it was just one time) you couldn’t get it up and the next day see it’s all over Rate Your Shag. Fair enough most people wouldn’t care because it’s anonymous but it still encourages bullying and we shouldn’t encourage such pages to exist. Yes, we can all have a laugh but people’s private lives should remain just that.

On the other side of the coin obviously the page was meant as a piss take. It’s just that this page has gone too far. We can all laugh at each other’s embarrassing stories but would perhaps prefer it not to be all over Facebook. It also encourages people who believe they’re God’s gift to boast about their previous triumphs. Perhaps you should have to give the other participant’s (or participants’) side of the story before boasting about how good you were with that fit one from the Raz. It’s this kind of pretentious crap that’s clogging up our newsfeed.

Save your horror stories or egotistical bullshit for your friends instead of jizzing it all over facebook. No one cares.
