The best winter dates in Chapel Hill

Let’s move beyond the Daily Grind

So you and bae want to chill before you both leave each other’s side for winter break – unless you’ve DTR’ed and they are meeting your parents this winter, in which case I salute you both.

There are some pretty great places to go on a date throughout the winter in Chapel Hill. No, I don’t mean the Daily Grind. After this week of exams, your significant other is going to connect that with 8am exams and crying into their textbooks.

So you want a warm drink? One great date in the wintertime is a trip to Sugarland for cocoa and cupcakes. We all know Christmas is only a proxy holiday to celebrate chocolate, so what better way to celebrate the magic substance than to drink chocolate while eating a chocolate cupcake? I don’t think there is one. Estimated cost is about $6 a person, but remember Tuesday is half-off cupcake day, ya cheapos.

If you want to spread the holiday cheer, a great way to make someone’s day “merry and bright” is to have a date dedicated to handing out Starbucks hot chocolate to the homeless along Franklin Street. The hot chocolates are $2 at the Starbucks on Franklin Street, so you can buy 10 for around $20. That is a lot of chocolatey happiness for the homeless. Estimated price: from $2 to $20.

So you gained some winter weight and eating in front of your SO isn’t your favorite thing, I get it. Here are other awesome options close to campus that don’t feature food at all.

Morehead Planetarium is open year-round and students should try it at least once. For people who go to class, there are shows on Saturdays and Sundays in the mid-morning and afternoon.

One classic show is the Carolina Skies star show which highlights the constellations visible at the time of year you see the show, AKA the winter. You and your date will be acting like the Wise Men looking for those stars. Price: $6.51 for students, $7.68 for other adults.

If you enjoy spending time in the cold and you’re willing to beat up a d00k student for those of us back home, American Tobacco in Durham offers an outdoor skating rink Wednesday to Saturday from now until February 15th. Nothing says romance quite like falling on your ass in front of your significant other. Being clumsy is cute, right? Estimated price: $10 for skating and rental skates.

Nothing quite compares to curling up and cuddling with a book. Check out Flyleaf Books on MLK. If you’re 21, buy puzzle books, get drunk off peppermint schnapps in bed, then try to do crosswords. If you’re not, try to find the perfect book to read with each other while sipping on coffee or cocoa. Estimated price: to your heart’s content.
