What it’s like to have a roommate who comes from Louisiana

She gave me a goody bag on our first day together

We always talk about the Southern culture. I come from Paris, France but I’ve lived in New York City in the past.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect having a roommate from the South, but knew it was a possibility now I go to school in Atlanta.

Luckily, I was in for a treat.

The first day of school, she gave me a huge bag full of goodies

I still don’t know what to do with them! There were beaded necklaces of every color and shape hanging around my room.

There were also weird packs of food including, “Zapps Voodoo chips” which – I can confirm – are the best.

No wonder she misses food from back home… but, for real – why so many spices?

If you struggle with Hotlanta’s heat and humidity, she will laugh at you

She was a pro at handling curly hair and humidity, and how to dress in the weather I’d never experienced.

I probably would’ve died in September without her! When the heat came back in April I was totally prepared, full credit to my wonderful roommate.

Thanks for not letting me fall for the Nike short and T shirt fashion, much appreciated.

Ignore the smug weather comments, she’ll still get sunburnt

Thought her skin would’ve gotten used to the sun after 18 years in Louisianna? Think again.

The good thing is she knows all the tricks to get rid of sunburn fast!

When sunstroke happens…

You’ve never seen anyone more excited by snow

That one time it snowed for 5 minutes, she dragged me downstairs, almost fell over and literally couldn’t handle seeing snow for one of the first times. She was so amazed by this white stuff falling down from the sky. Cue taking as many pictures as possible and initiating a huge snowball fight.

You get an overdose of “y’all”

You can never forget that she’s from the South because y’all is basically omnipresent. When you come to college in the South, there’s a voice in your head that tells you not to say it, but inevitably you fall afoul…

I blame y’all.

When our bid day was Mardis Gras themed, I was in the money

After having spent a couple of month with a Louisiana girl of course I ended up in the sorority that had a Mardi Gras Bid day!

There were even more beads and colorful everythings covering my room.

The best part is that her car back home is a truck

We always picture those big cars and trucks from the US. They’re omnipresent in the South around all those plantations.

Here’s hoping she brings it to college next year…
