Here’s why Cannes Film Festival has permanently banned ‘naked’ dresses on the red carpet
Bianca Censori is shaking right now
If you were hoping for a celebrity to make a scandalous show at the Cannes Film Festival this year, prepare to be disappointed as the organisation has flat out banned “naked” dresses, alongside ones that are particularly “voluminous.”
The Cannes Film Festival starts today, but why exactly has the red carpet dress code been so drastically updated and overhauled? Let’s find out!
The organisation issued a statement about the rule change, stating: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival.
“Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted.
“The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”
When the Hollywood Reporter reached out to the Cannes press office for more clarification, a festival rep explained that the change was updated to reflect “certain rules that have long been in effect.”
The goal of the update is “not to regulate attire per se but to prohibit full nudity on the carpet” in accordance with the framework of Cannes as well as French law, according to the Cannes rep.
Cannes has always had a strict dress code, with the rules even garnering some serious controversy after multiple female attendees were turned away from the Palais for not wearing heels to watch a screening of Carol.
Emily Blunt called the situation “very disappointing” alongside others who voiced their dissatisfaction, leading to the rules over dress code becoming more relaxed over the 2015 festival.
Thierry Frémaux, the chief of the entire festival, claimed the controversy was nothing more than an unfounded rumour.
