Expensive dates and scripting rumours: The juicy production secrets of Love on the Spectrum
There's a unique casting process
It’s safe to say the most recent Love on the Spectrum season went down a total treat with lovers of the show. We got to see Dani, Abbey, Tanner, Madison, Connor and co all navigate their dating lives. Season three of the Netflix show is boasting a hell of a lot of success stories. Some moments literally look like something out of a movie which leaves people wondering if it really is all as we seen on screen. So, let’s take a look at the production secrets of Love on the Spectrum.
Love on the Spectrum’s casting process
The Love on the Spectrum producers are hands-on when it comes to the casting process.
In an interview with Parade, Cian O’Clery explained:
“We develop relationships with various organisations, support groups, communities and individuals, and just put the call out, we send out flyers that explain who we are and what we’re doing, and if you’re interested in meeting with us and talking about it, get in touch. Lots and lots of people write in.”
Tanner and Connor’s mums explained how their sons were cast for the show in an interview with The Lift Lab Podcast.
While Connor’s brother, Jack, tweeted the show’s producer, Tanner, and his family responded to a casting call.
The cast and crew are friends
While a lot of TV shows might see the cast and crew connect just for the period they’re working together, Love on the Spectrum is different.
As some people may have noticed during the episode confessionals, the cast speaks directly to Cian, which shows the close relationship they have with the show’s producer.
Speaking of whether he stays in touch with the cast after filming, Cian said: “A hundred percent. It’s like a family…”
He continued: “It’s amazing how close everyone’s become. It’s not one of those shows where you just film people and don’t see or talk to them again. It’s nice to be able to keep in touch with people; make sure they had a positive experience, and that they still feel like they’re part of the family.”
Who pays for the dates on Love on the Spectrum?
Love on the Spectrum season three sees the cast go on some seriously epic dates.
The locations are stunning, and all in all, it seems the couples have a wonderful time.
To address any ‘scripted’ rumours swirling, Cian says the cast “lead the experience” and they’re not told exactly “where to go and what to do” during their dating journey.
He explained the costs are covered, with Parade adding: “O’Clery has previously confirmed that while the cast members are not compensated for being on the show, the dates and transportation are paid for.”
He said: “People aren’t left out of pocket by being part of the experience, that’s all I can say…”
What about all of those gifts?
Everyone was literally in bits seeing Tyler’s gifts for Madison in season three.
He set the bar high for men across the world as he gave her thoughtful presents on their dates.
When it comes to who forks out for the gifts, that’s down to the individuals themselves.
Tyler opted to shell out for Pandora charms, American Girl Dolls, and theme park tickets and in total, he spent over $600.
Expert ‘doesn’t do the matching’
We see neurodiversity expert Jennifer Cook in action during Love on the Spectrum.
She visits some of the cast to offer advice before dates. In season three, we see her advising Madison and Jennifer’s words of wisdom really seem to come in handy for her.
Jennifer plays a big role in the show, but she clarifies how she’s not the one who “matches” cast members in an Instagram comment. That’s left to the producers.
She responded to a fan who wanted to find love, and wrote: “I don’t do the matching! sending loving vibes, though!”
