When Selling Sunset first hit Netflix, the two cast members introduced their pup, Niko. They were in a relationship together when they got him, but then Jason Oppenheim and Mary Fitzgerald split up.
Jason Oppenheim shares news on dog
Jason and Mary sat down with Niko, a Chihuahua, to tell his ex they “don’t have much time left with him”. He then started to cry, and hugged Mary, before telling her, “I’m sorry.”
Mary put her hand over her mouth and cried with him. During the trailer, Chrishell Stause is seen hugging an emotional Jason as he grieves the loss of his older dog with Mary.
They are also dog parents to Zelda [pictured above], who is still alive. Jason and Mary have matching tattoos of Niko’s name on their forearms, who they brought home while they were a couple years ago.
Mary and Jason mourn late Niko
Mary and Jason revealed they lost their dog, Niko, in March. After his passing, Fitzgerald wrote on Instagram, “If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.”
They wrote, “For 18 years you made us smile and laugh, and filled our world with immeasurable happiness. With your unconditional love and loyalty, you comforted us when we cried.”
“Tearing our own hearts out so we could help you to avoid suffering was the only loving option we had. It was the hardest thing we have ever done. We miss you so much already,” Mary and Jason added.
They shared him for 18 years
Mary and Jason have had shared custody of Niko for 18 years, since their split years ago. The former couple rescued two long-haired chihuahuas when they were dating.
The Oppenheim Group co-owner thanked Niko and Zelda for winning the Showbiz Real Estate Elite 2022 award for Variety, calling the pups his “little kiddos” who he “couldn’t have done it without”.
