Charlie Jeer is never seen without his gold bangle on Too Hot to Handle. He’s finally revealed the meaning behind the glinting jewellery, which is a symbolism of strength, as well as family sacrifice.
Netflix helped Charlie rise to fame while looking for love. The Too Hot to Handle contestant calls his gold bangle a Kaba, which is widely known as a symbol of the Sikhism religion.
THTH fans spot Charlie’s bangle
Charlie Jeer has not taken his gold bangle off on Too hot to Handle. Many have been bombarding him with questions about why it’s so important he wears the jewellery piece constantly.
He revealed that it’s called a Kara, which he began wearing after his grandfather taught him of the family history. Charlie “knows he might not look it” but explained he is half Indian and half English.
“My family on my Dad’s side are from Punjabi, an area of North India, and their religion is Sikhism,” Charlie said on a TikTok video, addressing interest among fans over his bangle.
After the second world war, there was a mass immigration of Indians over to the UK to help rebuild the economy, Charlie explained, revealing the Sikhs were recognisable due to their turbans.
Charlie continued in the video, “Many Sikhs never shave their hair or beard, but my Babaji was so badly racially abused when he came to this country, that he did that.”
He reveals symbolism of jewellery
Charlie’s father married a British woman, which is “how he’s here today”. Having grown up in Kent, UK, which he claims to be not very diverse, he “didn’t know much about where my family come from”.
“When my Babaji told me this story, it really struck a nerve in me where I realised that racism had caused something that had been in my family heritage for so long to be taken out,” Charlie said.
He said it’s “important” for him to recognize that heritage and be proud of it, which is why he chooses to wear his Kara, as it symbolises strength and the sacrifices his family made for him.
