After weeks of speculation, a viral meme, and a case of mistaken identity, 28 Years Later producer Andrew Macdonald has finally revealed whether Cillian Murphy is reprising his role as Jim in the upcoming horror film.

To understand the demand for Cillian’s return we must first journey back to November when 28 Years Later was announced with an action-packed trailer. Besides the creepy poem used as a backing track, people on Twitter were obsessing over the idea of Cillian Murphy secretly being a decrepit zombie. It turned out to be newcomer Angus Neill.

Now, Andrew Macdonald has put rumours to rest – take a look.

Is Cillian Murphy in 28 Years Later?

28 Days Later

Cillian Murphy was the man who launched the widely celebrated franchise back in 2002 when he starred as Jim in 28 Days Later. There was then a 28 Weeks Later with Jeremy Renner, but let’s just pretend that one didn’t happen.

Cillian’s involvement in the sequel was always a possibility, especially after he told The Independent: “I didn’t know that – I would be there in a flash. I made two movies with both of those guys, and I would love to work with them again. Of course, I’m there.”

But, in a new interview with Empire, Andrew shared the devastating news that Cillian won’t be appearing in 28 Years Later alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer.

“[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line,” he told the publication. Though this is obviously a sad day for Cillian Murphy lovers, it does add some weight to the theory that he will be the baddie in the greenlit 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple.

Instead, Cillian is acting as an executive producer on the film, though we all know this is largely a role given to earlier stars as a show of respect.

“He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer,” Andrew added, “And I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.”

Brb, just gonna have a cry.
